Articles on Alcoholism
Alcoholism or alcohol addiction, sometimes called alcohol
dependency, is a disease which destroys families and kills
countless tens of thousands of people every year.
Some people are able to imbibe alcohol and suffer few ill
effects. They, thank goodness, are the fortunate majority. But
there are others to whom taking alcohol triggers a reaction -
almost like an allergy - where they become dependant on the
substance. Their common-sense and ability to know when
they've had enough just disappears once they have had a few
drinks. Their self-discipline and personal control goes out of
the window, together with their better judgement.
Tomorrow or next week, they will wake up with a hangover and
ask themselves how they could have done this stupid thing yet
again. But at the time, they were having the time of their
lives, and nobody could tell them to leave the booze alone for
a while and go home to sleep.
For an alcoholic, no number of drinks, however large,
can be enough. And just one drink is too much.
The same applies to any addict and the substance or
behaviour which they are addicted to. Please read
